What are dental crowns?
A cap that’s used to cover and protect a weak or damaged tooth, crowns recreate the strength, size, and shape of a tooth when fillings aren’t an option. They’re made from porcelain, ceramics, resin, or metals, and once they’re cemented on a tooth, they’re permanent.
In a crown and bridge treatment, one or two crowns help hold a dental bridge in place.
What are dental bridges?
Comprised of two or more crowns that cover the natural teeth or implants on either side of a gap with a fake tooth in between (otherwise known as a pontic), a bridge is a permanent prosthetic option that brings back function and aesthetics to a patient’s smile.
How are teeth prepared for a dental bridge?
After a full examination of the teeth receiving crowns is complete, the top and sides of each tooth will be filed down. Next, a mold of these teeth will be taken and used in the creation of the final crowns, bridge, and pontic. While you wait for their completion, our dentist will provide you with a temporary bridge to protect your teeth and gums.
Once we receive your completed bridge, we’ll schedule an appointment to have it fitted and adjusted, if needed. This may be accomplished in one or multiple visits. If your bridge is fixed, it will be cemented in place.
How long does this treatment last?
It depends on your commitment to daily oral hygiene, but with diligent care, patients can expect it to last between 10 to 15 years.
